Jharkhand police are deploying specially trained women constables, known as Nirbhaya Shakti Mahila Arakshis, across 38 women’s police stations. These officers will focus on investigating crimes against women and children, particularly sexual offenses.
The initiative also extends to police stations with high crime rates against women. Out of 450 applicants, 150 constables have been selected for training. On Tuesday, the second batch of 46 officers commenced their training at the Investigation Training Institute in Hotwar.
Jharkhand State Legal Service Authority Secretary Ranjana Asthana and Inspector General of the Criminal Investigation Department Asim Vikrant Minz were present to inaugurate the program.
The first batch of 45 constables has already been deployed. Minz highlighted that the trained constables will revolutionize policing, going beyond filing FIRs and charge sheets by offering counselling, and primary treatment to victims, and supporting them during trials. A senior police official added that these specially trained officers have a more effective approach to questioning victims, encouraging them to open up and speak freely.
